Who needs to audition?

For those interested in an ensemble role only, AND who have been in a Bart’s Bards production within the past three years, auditions are not required. However, we still need all registration paperwork completed and submitted to be a part of the show. Please either drop off your completed forms at the school during auditions or send them via e-mail to Barry Reynolds (breynolds4@cinci.rr.com) by 9:00pm, March 19th.

For those interested in a speaking part (see list of characters below) or anyone who has not been involved in a Bart’s Bards production within the past three years, auditions are required.

Audition time slots for Seussical are being scheduled via SignUp Genius.  Please visit the following webpage to signup for your audition time:

http://www.signupgenius.com/go/60b0e4eaba92ba4fd0-seussical

While walk-ins are certainly welcome at auditions, it is highly encouraged to reserve your slot via SignUp Genius as this will not only guarantee you the time you want, but will also likely shorten the time needed to complete the audition process.

All auditioners will need to fill out Audition Forms, which can be downloaded here. Please download, print, and fill out these forms so as to have them ready at the audition. When printing these forms, we ask that you print them single-sided (4 sheets of paper). This will enable the proper processing of the paperwork.

Auditioners who are cast in Seussical will need to fill out a Bart's Bards Membership form, which will be available at the first rehearsal on April 7th, 2018. A membership fee of $15 per person (max. $30 per family) will be due when the form is handed in.

Audition requirements:

  • Sing 16-32 bars of a song from any Broadway production of your choosing
  • Possibly read from the script if you are auditioning for a named role (assigned in the audition room by the Director)
  • Learn and perform a small dance sequence taught at the audition by the choreographer
  • Accompaniment is required for the singing portion of the audition (no a capella). An audition accompanist will be provided for those who bring sheet music to the audition. Recorded accompaniment is also acceptable. An external speaker will be provided to enable the playing of recorded accompaniment from your smartphone or other electronic device.

Performance Dates: 5 performances, June 21st – 24th , 2018; including 2 matinees and 3 evening performances

List of Characters

The Cat In The Hat
The Cat In The Hat is the essence of mischief, fun, and imagination. The Cat stirs things up, causes trouble, but always sets things right again, helping Jojo to discover the power of his own imagination as they create the story for the show together. Look for a physically adept actor (male or female) to play The Cat, one who will be able to play many comic cameos and is comfortable improvising with an audience. The Cat does not need to be your strongest singer, but should still have good rhythm and timing.
Gender: Both
Vocal range top: D6
Vocal range bottom: Bb4

Jojo
Jojo is a "Thinker", a smart child with a wild imagination. He can be played as being a little bit awkward, a little bit of a loner, or simply a rambunctious kid whose Thinks get him into constant trouble. By the end of the show, he learns what it means to be a responsible member of his world, using the power and possibilities of his own Thinks. He should be one of your stronger singers.
Gender: Both
Vocal range top: D6
Vocal range bottom: Ab4

Horton The Elephant
Horton The Elephant is a gentle giant. Think of him as a big-hearted blue-collar guy who is steadfast, responsible and always tries to do the right thing for his friends. He is imaginative and receptive to the world around him. He is very unselfconscious. Horton's view of the world never changes - he believes in its goodness. By the end of the show, without even realizing it, he is ready to become a parent.
Gender: Male
Vocal range top: E6
Vocal range bottom: A4

Gertrude Mcfuzz
Gertrude Mcfuzz is very self-conscious and aware that her one-feather tail isn't perfect. Gertrude changes during the show from a neurotic, nervous and shy bird into one with the power to protect and care for a baby elephant bird and commit herself to Horton. In other words, she stops worrying about her looks and grows up.
Gender: Female
Vocal range top: Eb5
Vocal range bottom: F3

Mayzie La Bird
Mayzie La Bird is self-centered, selfish, and vain. Mayzie will never admit to her own flaws. She manipulates anyone she can into doing what she wants. But Mayzie isn't all bad. In giving up her egg to Horton once and for all, she has a moment of generosity-she realizes she isn't the kind of person who would be a good parent, and she does the best thing she can for the egg.
Gender: Female
Vocal range top: E5
Vocal range bottom: G#3

Sour Kangaroo
Sour Kangaroo isn't really sour at all. She's just got a lot of attitude. She's loud, brassy, and a lot of fun.
Gender: Female
Vocal range top: Eb5
Vocal range bottom: A3

The Wickersham Brothers
The Wickersham Brothers are not bad guys! They're simply a lot like kids who tease, play pranks, and get a kick out of making mischief, although often at others' expense. They enjoy hanging around with one another, making music together on the street corner, and playing off one another. Encourage each of your actors to find their own Wickersham persona.
Gender: Both
Vocal range top: G6
Vocal range bottom: A4

Mr. Mayor
Mr. and Mrs. Mayor are Whos who are parents trying hard to raise a difficult child in a difficult world. They may get aggravated with Jojo, but they love him dearly and try to do the right thing, even if it turns out to be a mistake.
Gender: Male
Vocal range top: A6
Vocal range bottom: C5

Bird Girls
Three sassy birds and citizens of the Jungle of Nool. The popular girls in any school--a clique of pretty, self-centered "back up birds" who do whatever Mayzie does. They often act as storytellers, picking up where The Cat left off. A big presence throughout the evening. Good singer/movers with lots of soulful, sassy singing. Think Destiny’s Child.
Gender: Female
Voice Part: SA

General Gengus Khan Schmitz
A General who is bursting with pride at the military academy he runs, and the boys he turns out. He is not mean; he honestly thinks he is doing the right thing and is making the world a better place. Strong singer/actor with comic ability.

Voice Part: Baritone

A baby kangaroo and a citizen of the Jungle of Nool. She is the Sour Kangaroo’s daughter and does whatever her mother does. She’s very sassy with lots of attitude. Good singer/actor with comic ability.
